5th Annual International Scientific and Practical Seminar «Document Restoration: Conservatism and Innovations — 2021»

Dear colleagues!

The Russian State Library invites you to take part in the 5th Annual International Scientific and Practical Seminar «Document Restoration: Conservatism and Innovations — 2021».

Where : Russian State Library, 3/5 Vozdvizhenka street, Moscow, Russia.

When : 5 – 9 April 2021

Admission: free for restorers, custodians of library collections, and members of the conservation staff. Commercial organizations and their representatives, as well as individuals can participate in the seminar on a paid-for basis.

Registration is required.

During the seminar, there will be a unique opportunity to visit lectures, workshops, exhibitions, and discussions on the topical issues of conservation and new technologies in document restoration as well as to meet international and Russian experts in the field of document preservation.

The theoretical part of the seminar will cover the following topics:

  • Restoration of book binding: research, traditional and new methods, reconstruction, and recreation.
  • Restoration, parchment studies.
  • Restoration, paper studies. Practices.
  • Studies in conservation: new technologies, unconventional solutions, and monitoring.
  • The effect of storage conditions on the physical properties of documents. Phase storage, encapsulation, and stabilisation methods.
  • Biodeterioration of documents: prevention care, damage control.
  • Training in document preservation: problems and solutions. Continuing professional education courses.
  • The features of photo restoration. Field experience.

Workshops and tutorials:

A 3-day workshop led by the restorers from the Mesrop Mashtots Research Institute of Ancient Manuscript (Matenadaran), Armenia:
«Formation of the Traditional Armenian Binding».
Presenters: Senior restorers Susanna Barseghyan, Artur Petrosyan, Taguhi Tshenteretshyan.

Workshop on the Coptic, Islamic, and Byzantine endbands.
Presenter: Sherif Afifi, Head of Rare Books Conservation & Restoration Unit, Conservation & Restoration Section, Manuscripts Museum, Cultural Outreach, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, (Egypt).

Workshop: «Basic Chemistry for Restorers»
Presenter: Aleksei Kashcheev, Head of the Preventive Conservation Sector, Department of Restoration of Library Collections, RSL.

Workshop: «Features of Restoration of Gelatin Photos of the 19th century».
Presenter: Elena Kalistratova, art restorer of the first category.

Workshop: «Restoring the Integrity of Document’s Base by Means of the Paper Pulp Hand-Filling ».
Presenter: Irina Sharapova, Head of the Restoration Department, Russian State Archive of Scientific and Technical Documentation.

Tutorial: «Gels, Microemulsions and Nanomaterials in the Conservation of Paper-Based Artwork»
Presenter: Antonio Mirabile, paper conservator, researcher. Partner of APACHE Project, (Paris, France).

Tutorial: «Restoration of Cloth Binding. Author’s Technique»
Presenter: Cecile Brossard, art restorer, National Library of France, (France).

Workshop on the manufacturing of marble paper
Presenter: Ekaterina Hyyrynen (Savelyeva), certified master in the production of marbled paper.

Workshop: «A Set of Measures for the Prevention and Elimination of the Consequences of Biological Damage»
Presenter: Oksana Shadrina, specialist of the Preventive Conservation Sector, Department of Restoration of Library Collections, RSL.

Please note that the hereinabove topics of reports and workshops have been confirmed. The agenda for the theoretical and practical parts will expanded. The number of workshop participants is limited. Places will be filled in order of registration. Follow the latest information on our website.
